Weekly Response 8

Weekly Response 8

1. I agree with Dotson with hoe he says he needs to catch the audience’s attention. It is hard to pay attention to something if you don’t get anything out of it. Everybody will pay attention if they have something important to pay attention to. I also agree with having an even amount of sound and pictures or videos. A story could get boring if it was all talking and not many different pictures. Also I don’t like too long of stories. I thought it was interesting how important he made the natural sounds seem. Those sounds and other natural touches need to be in the story to keep people’s attention. Dotson says that having a break in talking to soak up information is also important. When watching a news cast I would never realize the break or anything else if I wasn’t paying attention.
2. Pianist loses finger in snow blower, lives to play
3. –A car driving down the street and you can hear the sound of the wheels crunching on the ground. This made the shot of him driving to the hospital a lot more dramatic and not just a car ride.
- You hear the snow blower working. The sound of it working quickly and fast makes you realize just how painful the experience was.
-The sound of the bandages being put on his fingers. The natural sounds so far seem to be the important parts of this story. The snow blower was how the accident happened and the bandages are the aftermath of the accident.
-Clapping of his audiences after he performed the piano was important because it shows how even now that he has the bandages he can still do the thing he loves and well.
4. –There is a wide shot of the pianist while he is talking about the accident with his house is in the background. It’s is an interesting camera shot because he is talking really far away but it mixes up the different shots.
-There is a medium close up of him talking again, but it’s strange because the edges seem blurry. It is interesting that he is close up on the left but then the right there is something different happening.
-One of the camera shots is a wide shot of somebody snow blowing their driveway but then over that there are news articles shooting across the screen. I thought this was a cool effect.
-There was a cutaway shot of the keys while he is playing the piano. It is cool to listen to him play while seeing the keys going along with it.
5. Nothing can get in the way of what he loves
6. This story uses a lot of Dotson’s ideas. There are a lot of natural sounds throughout the story. The natural sounds are things you wouldn’t even realize are happening unless you were looking for them because they are things we listen to all the time. There are pictures also throughout this story. For example there are times where there was a shot of the snow blower or of a car driving. There were also nice camera shots of him playing the piano.

Weekly Response 7

Weekly Response 7

There had been a lot of good stories so far this year. One of my favorites was the one about the hockey team getting in trouble for the harlem shake video. I was the manager of the hockey team, so that story was one I heard about a lot before I even saw the news report. I also liked news story about the Olympics cutting out wrestling. I thought it was really interesting because I couldn’t imagine training the Olympics and then finding something like that out.

Timing: 1,2,2,5,1,6,2,2,6,3,1,6: Average 3.5

Significance: 4,5,3,1,3,1,1,5,4,3,5,4: Average 3.25

Human Interest: 5,1,4,4,5,4,4,1,2,2,1,2: Average 2.92

Proximity: 4,1,1,3,4,3,6,3,3,3,2,5: Average 3.17

Prominence: 5,6,6,6,2,3,6,4,5,1,3,6: Average 4.42

Oddity/Uniqueness: 1,4,5,1,6,3,1,2,1,4,3,2: Average 2.75

Most of my numbers really varied on the story. A couple of the categories like human interest and significance never were the least important. I think it is interesting that usually some things don’t matter as much as others. Timing was something that I thought would be the most important for all of the stories but then some of the later stories it didn’t seem to be as important.

26.  Cutaway of movies

27.  Close up of owner

28.  Mid shots of workers

29.  Close up of owner

30.  Cutaway of store

In this video I saw a ton of different camera shots. A lot of them were close up shots of the owner and back to somebody looking at movies or just a close up of a stack of movies. The camera didn’t stay at one place for too long. When the owner was talking it would have gotten really boring if the camera was on him the whole time he was talking. The camera left him and went around the store a lot. There were a lot of dramatic shots of the front of the store and things being sold that made the story a lot more interesting. Overall this story would have been very boring if the camera stayed in one place. It is good that the camera kept of going back to the main guy talking. I also liked how at one point a shopper was being interviewed to get a different view point.

Week 3

This whole book is about what it takes to be a good story teller and a good writer. I like how he says to not use a passive voice while writing but use an active voice. I agree with this because I think it will make it a lot more interesting. I agree with how he says to avoid uncommon terms. Don’t try to be fancy with your writing but try and keep the reader interested. When I am reading something I’m not looking for how smart the writer sounds, I’m reading it for interest and for something to pull me in. I like how he says to make the writing conversational. I think that is important to get the reader’s attention. If it sounds more like a conversation it is easier to picture somebody in front of you saying it. This all fits in with me as a writer because I never think of it from the reader’s point of view. I think I write to get it over with and not make it very conversational.

This article was written really well. It used a lot of the examples that Dotson said would make good writing. I loved the way the article was started. It drew my attention in right away, not only because I a huge hockey fan but because who wouldn’t be interested in a story about $50,000? One of the big things that stood out to me right away was it was very conversational. It asked a lot of questions that were quickly answered after they were asked. All the quotes make it a little more interesting to read. Instead of a solid paragraph explaining what happened I like how he breaks it up. Also he used an active voice and it pulled me in right away. I think it is a little cliché he gives the money back. I don’t think there are many teenage kids or especially 11 year old kids who would give $50,000 back if they won it. After everything he thought of before doing it you would think he would follow through. I feel like in all stories the person ends up doing the right thing but in real life I don’t know if that would actually happen or not.

To start off I think this family is crazy. I couldn’t imagine having that many kids. They must really love football if they want every kid to go through all the same things. I’m sure there is a ton of pressure on you as a kid to be exactly like your older sibling. The news broadcast was really well done. It was conversational and I felt like I learned a lot about the family because I felt like I was the one interviewing them. They tell you everything you need to know without hearing the interviewer ask the questions. I think there was an active voice because it was talking us through the whole story. I was surprised she was disappointed that all of the kids were done. I understand having something in your life for a long time and then it suddenly being done but at the same time you would think she would be excited to have some free time.

Week 2

I noticed a few things about the way Dotson writes. He makes his writing very personable. Dotson also uses a ton of detail to describe everything. He writes a lot about all the different camera shots you could do. Also he says how journalism is changing and reporters need to become better at capturing stories. I thought it was a pretty easy read and he made it easy to fallow along. It wasn’t just same text book that is impossible to read without falling asleep. Dotson did a very good and detailed job of giving us his tips on how to be a successful journalist.

Something I learned from Dotson is that you should start writing in the middle instead at the beginning. He said it is a lot easier. I think this is very interesting because I would never think to do that on my own. I also learned that you shouldn’t go into an interview with a plan. You should go into it and have a conversation with the person you are trying to learn things about, and you will find out a lot more. I think this could be challenging for some people but if you are a journalist you have to be good at holding conversations with people.

There are two columns for the scripts. On the left side of a script there is a title, location, duration time of the script, correspondent, and producer. It shows what the reader sees. All of the writing is capitalized and sticks out. On the right side, there are detail writing segments. Some of the writing is just a sentence and some of the writing is big paragraphs. This side shows what the reader hears.

Weekly Response 5

Weekly response
Week 5

1.    Something that all these pictures have in common is that they all show a lot of emotion. The facial expressions on people in the pictures show exactly what they are feeling. A lot of them have a disaster in the background or people crying that shows some kind of disaster did happen.

2.     My first favorite picture is one with a bunch of girls smiling. Their hair is flying in the wind and going everywhere. I like this one because it is one of the few that shows happy emotions. I like that all the girls seem to be having fun and seem carefree. My second favorite picture is one called “doin’ the wave.” The picture has people on a building with a giant wave coming right at them. I really like this picture because I love the ocean and I love jumping through waves and it takes that to the next level. My third favorite picture is two guys on a sled. They look like they just went off a huge jump because they are flying through the air. I like this picture because it looks really fun. At the same time I would be really scared if I was one of the two guys.

      3. Every one of these pictures has a story behind them. With the emotion showing and the scenes going on around them you can assume what is happening. Not one of these pictures is boring. If you were to make up what was happening in the pictures you might not be exactly right, but you would be pretty close. They all have the same idea going for them and share the idea  that something big happened.
